What's HYOGU?

表具とは、和紙や糊、布地などを材料とした、日本の伝統的な紙工芸です。
和紙、糊、裂地を材料として、何度も加湿と乾燥を繰り返し完成します。

「表装」とも呼ばれる表具は、古くから芸術や宗教が盛んであった京都を中心に発達してきました。
仏教の伝来とともに中国より伝わり、経巻の表装、掛け軸など、
仏教の広まりとともに仏画像の礼拝用として始められたのが原型とされています。

Hyogu, also known as Hyoso, is a traditional Japanese paper mounting craft
that uses washi Japanese paper, glue and pieces of fabric.
A Hyogu piece is completed by repeating a humidifying and drying process several times.

表具の役割は、おもに次の3つです。

  • 室内における調度品
  • 季節や客に合わせたおもてなしの道具
  • 作品を次世代に橋渡しする保存性
  • Furniture
  • Interior decoration in accordance with the seasons or when welcoming guests
  • Preservation of artwork for future generations

「襖、壁装」など日常生活に密着した実用的なもの、
「掛け軸、額装、屏風、画帖、巻き物」など美術工芸品的なもの、
さらには高度な技術と豊かな経験が要求される「古美術」の修復など、
現代においても表具の役割は多岐にわたります。

表具はそれ自体が独立したものではなく、
常に「書画」を鑑賞する上での手だてとして、
さらには「書画」を保存するという役目も担っています。
目立たず控えめでありながら、
書画と一体となり品格のある調和をつくりだし、
なおかつ表具そのものの品位も損なわないように
工夫することが要求されるのです。

Specifically, the craftsmen undertake creating works in the following three spheres:
1) Functional items for daily life such as sliding doors and wall coverings.
2) Art crafts such as hanging scrolls, frames, folding screens, picture albums, scrolls.
3) Restoration of antique items that requires a high level of technique and experience.
